Shopping tip:
Bring something to put your items in as you shop, especially if you shop early because IF they have carts available, chances are they are all taken! A laundry basket or a mesh tote works great (something breathable and see-through)! Just be sure not to bring a bag that conceals the items. That may come across badly! :)

Selling tip:
When tagging your items, think about this "Do I want to have this as a left-over item?" That will help you to PRICE THE ITEM TO SELL and as a result, you will sell so much more! I wish that I would have asked myself that question when doing my very first sale, which was a total flop for me b/c of overpricing. Even more- let the items go 50% off! You do not want to see a rack full of leftovers when you come to get your items after a sale... and you suuure do not want to have to put them back in to that closet! :)

I use my iphone to search retail prices for bigger items or brands that I'm not sure about. Nothing is worse than getting caught up in the "moment" and realizing you paid too much for a used item. Nothing is better than finding a really good bargain on a practically new item!

Before going to our first beach trip last week, I got a darling Gap bathing suit for 50 cents for my 9 month old on the half-price day!!

I agree it is a MUST to have something to carry your goods in. I like a clothes basket with wheels or the recycle grocery bags. Really holds a lot. Also you need to have a top ten (or 20) must have list so you get what you need and be sure to check what you already have for next season. I have broght home the same toys, shoes and even shirt because I had forgotten I bought them at a previous sale or last season!

My best advice for selling at consignment sales is to price your items for what you would pay for it at a consignment sale.
My best advice for shopping for shoes at consignment sales is to make a foot print of your child's foot, I use fun foam, to measure the shoes to see if they'll fit.

My advice for selling at consignment sales other than pricing your item competitevely is to make your items presentable. The clothes look much more appealing to the customers when they do not look as though you just pulled them out of the laundry basket.

In addition, my advice for buyers, besides the MUST of having something to carry your goods in, is to make a list of the itmes you are looking for when you shop. Then (if you are OCD like me) organize the items on your list in the same category, i.e. toys together, large itmes (i.e. strollers, swings, etc.) together, clothing and shoes together, etc. When you start shopping, the room is so busy with other shoppers running crazy that if you zig zag back and forth looking for random things you think of then you are most likely going to forgot a number of items or be too late to get the really good deals. So much like a grocery store, make a list and stick to section by section with your list and then zig zag back and forth to see what is left! =)

Julie,
My best tip for a first time (or seasoned) consignment sale shopper is to make a list! Some of these sales can be overwhelming when you get in and see how big they are. I always try to look through my kids clothes to know what they have a ton of (play clothes, shorts, shirts, etc..,) or what they need (solid colored tee to match a pair of plaid shorts, sports shoes, etc..). As well, I usually have a list of their sizes (I've even gone so far as to measure the kids and bring a measuring tape with me!). It can be pretty easy to forget what you came looking for and more often than not, it can be easy to get carried away and buy "in the moment". A hour or so prep can prevent you from coming home to realize that you have 3 Halloween costumes for one child, and nothing for the other -oops!!
Thanks for the printable calendar - love that feature!

**Oh and don't forget a laundry basket! :) **

My biggest advice for shopping at consignment sales is: know what you want in advance and know what sizes you need and hit the isles that seem to sell out the fastest. For example, to me it seems like girls 2T always sell out of the cute stuff the quickest so that is usually where I head first!!! :)

My tip for shoppers is to pay attention to the cost of the item and the brand. Nothing like paying too much for something you can easily pick up off the clearance rack at Target for the cheaper (and brand new!). Also, bringing a bag, laundry basket, etc. is a must to carry your finds. Trust me, the first time I went to a sale I was the one pushing the toys around with my feet and carrying all the clothes on my arm!

A nice big bag to put all your items in as you shop. Arms get very tired trying to hold everything plus not dropping them as you shop.

Shopping Tip: If you are shopping for both boys and girls clothing, go for boys clothing first. Most sales don't get as much boy as girl and the best stuff goes first.

Selling Tip: as you pack up your fall/winter for the next consignment season, place sets together. This will cut down on the amount of time you have to spend this summer matching up sets!

My advice for shoppers is to make sure to double check any sets that you buy. I have been in a hurry sometimes and I get home only to discover that some of my tops and bottoms are completely different sizes. And sellers, please make a note on the tag if the top is a different size from the bottom!

Some consignment sales are in big areas with weak lighting, like gyms. Always take your clothes that you have planned to buy & inspect the clothes for stains in good lighting. Look on the clothes for worn spots especially the hiney & knee area. On infant clothes, always look around collar. Baby food stains are common. Another tip...try to go with a budget. Hehe, this is the hardest part. I have never stayed in my budget. I get so excited & even start buying for friends.

My best tip that I can give is to get to the sale early. Then go again during 1/2 price day. I'm new to the consignment shopping thing, so I don't have much to pass on yet. Also, bring a friend or family member with you. This way one person can save a spot in line, while you shop and vise versa. :)

I love finding things for my grandchildren! Especially smocked items....but I went to a sale this past weekend and bought a cute Strasburg smocked baseball jon jon, only to come home and see (in better light) that it had a bleach stain on the front. Please don't bring items that are stained or toys that don't work. Let's make our consigning times proud!
